ABOUT KANDI YAM
Kandi Yam began her career while serving in the
US Army Nurse Corp. This self taught clown participated in several events such as health and military post fairs. She also entertained at church picnics, vacation bible school and youth affairs. Kandi Yam also served in the civilian and military community as an aerobic instructor. Her Body Talk Aerobic Company traveled with her from one duty station to another.
As a nurse practitioner, she utilizes humor with her patients, especially in the pediatric and teen clinic. In the mental health sector, Kandi Yam leads psycho educational groups in nutrition and exercise. The patients participate in various dancing and organized physical activities: hokey pokey, hula hoops, electric slide and many line and aerobic dancing.
Kandi Yam's character is a nine year old girl from the Gullah Geechee Nation in the Sea Islands of South Carolina. She grew up on St. Helena Island, SC. She is multicultural being that her ancestors are from West Africa, which she has maintained the "Gullah" traditions. She has traveled abroad and has adopted many cultural customs. Her favorite foods are seafood dishes, hoppin' john, sweet potatoes and benne wafers.
Kandi Yam's friends, Kiwi, Sweet Potato, Shea & Fufu have fun together reminiscing and telling Gullah stories. They assists Kandi Yam while doing walk around clowning,"Gullah" stories, health and safety tips, bible stories and songs.
Kandi Yam created "The Calabash Band". This activity is performed outside. The children join in with instruments: guitars, maracas, cluster bells, cymbals, tom tom, ukulele, tone blocks, rhythm sticks and african instuments. Kids love marching to marine cadences, patriotic music, New Orleans ragtime, african music and of course some up to date recordings. They even love to march around with their instruments to gospel tunes during vacation bible school and camp.
Kandi Yam will eagerly serve you at your next event. She will bring laughter that will make your event one that will last well beyond the festivities. Kids love her energy, colorful costumes and makeup. She will delight the children with event favorites such as balloon sculpting, face painting, props, games, puppetry, 'The Calabash Band' and much More.
